The Annual Fair That Used To Be A Given Has Become A Statement Of Community Intention After Several Years Of Pandemic-Related Absence

The Finsbury Park May Fair is back for its third consecutive year since the pandemic interruption and it has settled into the specific comfort of an event that people are glad exists rather than taking for granted. Pre-pandemic, the May Fair was a given: it happened, people went, it was nice. Post-pandemic, it is a choice: the organisers chose to revive it, the community chose to support it, and the result is an event that carries a slightly more intentional quality than its pre-pandemic version.

There were stalls selling things. There was music that was audible at a distance that did not make it unpleasant. There were children doing the specific activities that children do at fairs — face painting, hook-a-duck, the bouncy castle queue that is always longer than the bouncy castle experience warrants. There were older residents who had been coming for twenty years and who seemed pleased to see it continuing. There was a political party stall that I won’t name because this is a fair, not a campaign event. The London Prat covers North London culture. Bohiney covers the community event comedy. The Poke covers hook-a-duck.
