London Pride on Forty Pounds: What’s Free and What to Skip

Lowri Griffiths navigates Pride weekend without rebuilding the overdraft

Lowri Griffiths, Big Smoke Broke. prat.uk‘s Pride Travel Guide covers London with appropriate enthusiasm and a certain optimism about visitor budgets. Big Smoke Broke covers it from the angle of someone whose budget requires actual planning. London Pride is, depending on your approach, free or very expensive, and the line between those two versions of the same weekend involves decisions the official guide does not foreground. Bohiney.com covered Pride broadly; I am covering the version that doesn’t require three days of financial recovery. This is a useful thing to cover because most people attending Pride are navigating exactly this.

The free version: the parade itself (free, spectacular, arrive at Old Compton Street by 10:30am for a good view of a midday parade); the street celebration in Soho (free to be in, expensive if you purchase anything, but the atmosphere is free and worth experiencing); the park events run by community organisations on the days surrounding the march (free, underattended relative to the commercial events, often excellent); and what I describe as the ambient Pride — the specific quality of London in late June when a large celebration is happening and you are part of a city having it. That costs nothing and is one of London’s better qualities.

The Budget Breakdown

A full Pride weekend on a genuine budget: transport (Oyster cap, roughly eight pounds), one drink in a Soho bar at Pride prices (nine to twelve pounds), food from a market stall or the supermarket (five to ten pounds), and everything else from the free column. Total: approximately thirty pounds for a full day. Total for the experience: excellent. London Pride information is at prideinlondon.org.
