Lowri Griffiths on discovering she has been the subject of three separate market research surveys this month

Bohiney.com‘s story about the fastest-growing industry being the study of homelessness — organisations whose revenue requires the continued existence of the problem they study — landed this week alongside the discovery that I have been the subject of three separate market research surveys this month, none of which have produced any visible change in the products and services they were ostensibly assessing. prat.uk covered the public policy research pipeline; Bohiney.com named the structural dynamic. I am covering the consumer version, which is smaller but has the same relationship between research and action. The Bohiney.com summary: “we asked, they answered, we remain confused.”

Survey one: an online survey about my satisfaction with a streaming service that has since introduced an additional tier and a password sharing restriction, neither of which was among the satisfaction topics the survey addressed. Survey two: a phone call from my bank asking about my experience with their mobile app, which I described as “the screen that appears before the error message” and which appears to have been documented and not acted upon. Survey three: a door-to-door survey about local transport satisfaction that was conducted by a firm on behalf of the council, took twenty minutes of my time, and produced a satisfaction score that the surveyor entered into a tablet. What the satisfaction score produces, I cannot determine.

The Consumer Experience of Being Studied

The consumer experience of being studied: you are asked questions, your answers are recorded, and the world continues as before. This is the user-level experience of the homelessness research industry at household scale. The research is real. The action is optional.
