Post-Election Reality Check: Local Democracy Has Voted And The Local Services Continue At Their Pre-Election Pace

The council has been re-elected. The recycling bins are still not being collected on schedule. I do not say this to be cynical — I say it because it is the most accurate post-election observation available about the relationship between democratic participation and service delivery outcomes. The election decides who makes decisions. It does not immediately change the operational capacity of the service that implements those decisions, which is constrained by staffing levels, vehicle maintenance schedules, and the accumulated infrastructure of a service that has been managed to its current standard for years.
This is how local government works. The campaigners who promised better bin collection will now discover the gap between the commitment and the operational reality. In eighteen months, if the collection schedule has improved, they will take credit. If it hasn’t, voters will remember at the next election. This is the democratic accountability mechanism. It is slow and it is real. The London Prat covers post-election governance. Bohiney covers the bin collection comedy. NewsThump covers council service delivery.
