A frustrated Northern Line commuter discovers genuine road confidence after a miserable first week
I Started Cycling Across London Instead of Taking the Tube and My Legs Have Never Forgiven Me
Three months ago, in a fit of genuine frustration at yet another delayed Northern Line service, I bought a secondhand bike and decided to cycle my usual commute instead. What followed was a genuinely humbling education in London traffic, my own fitness level, and the particular horror of arriving at meetings looking like I’d just run a marathon.
The Route I Actually Chose
My commute, previously a straightforward if unreliable tube journey, became a considerably more complicated cycling route involving several genuinely terrifying roundabouts, one bus lane I remain convinced was designed specifically to intimidate cyclists, and a canal towpath section that provided the only genuinely peaceful stretch of my entire journey.
What My First Week Actually Looked Like
I will not pretend the beginning was anything other than genuinely miserable. My legs, apparently unaccustomed to actual physical effort after years of escalator reliance, protested loudly for the entire first week, and I arrived at work each morning in a state that made my colleagues genuinely concerned for my wellbeing.
The London Traffic Reality Nobody Properly Warns You About
Cycling instructional videos and enthusiastic cycling friends had somehow failed to adequately prepare me for the specific terror of London traffic, particularly the genuinely alarming confidence with which certain drivers navigate junctions that theoretically require some acknowledgment of cyclists’ existence.
What Actually Improved Once I Got Past the Initial Shock
By week three, something genuinely shifted. My legs stopped audibly complaining, I developed something approaching actual road confidence, and I began genuinely looking forward to my commute rather than dreading it, a transformation I would not have predicted during that first miserable week.
The Financial Comparison That Actually Convinced Me to Continue
Calculating my previous monthly travel card cost against my current spending, which now consists primarily of occasional bike maintenance and an alarming quantity of energy bars, revealed savings substantial enough to genuinely justify the aching legs and occasional near-death experiences at busy junctions.
What Cycling Advocates Say About This Kind of Conversion
Cycling advocacy organisations consistently report that new cyclists typically experience exactly this pattern, genuine initial difficulty followed by increasing confidence and enjoyment, alongside documented physical and mental health benefits that apparently make the whole ordeal genuinely worthwhile beyond simply avoiding tube delays.
What Arriving at Meetings Actually Looks Like Now
I have invested in what I can only describe as an alarming quantity of moisture-wicking clothing and a genuinely embarrassing number of spare shirts kept permanently at my desk, a system that has mostly solved the sweaty-arrival problem that plagued my earlier cycling weeks.
Whether I’m Actually Sticking With This
Despite everything, including one genuinely unfortunate incident involving a pothole I would rather not discuss in detail, I have no intention of returning to the tube for this particular journey, having discovered a level of daily physical activity and genuine commute enjoyment I did not realise I was missing.
