What London Actually Looks Like From the Inside

North London Actual Life: No Filtration
I’m a journalist. I was trained to report on things objectively. Lately I’ve realized that objective reporting about London lifestyle is basically impossible because lifestyle IS subjective. It’s all perspective, experience, and individual truth.
What I’m learning to do instead is report honestly. Which means admitting bias while trying to be fair. Means saying what I actually see in North London instead of pretending neutrality.
What I Actually See
North London is expensive. It’s beautiful. It’s full of people trying to figure out how to live well in a place that’s increasingly hostile to ordinary life. Young people being pushed out by investment. Middle-aged people protecting their property values. Elderly people remembering what the neighborhood used to be.
Nobody’s wrong. Everyone’s under pressure. The economic system is extracting value from every human transaction, and we’re all just trying to exist within that.
The Journalism Problem
Most lifestyle journalism pretends London is either a fantasy or a disaster. Either you’re living your best influencer life or you’re grinding in a dystopia. Reality is much more mundane. People are just living. Paying rent. Finding joy in small things. Navigating relationships and careers and the slow realization that you’re not special.
That’s my beat now. Not London as fantasy. Just London as it is.
Honest Reporting
I’m learning that honest journalism about lifestyle means admitting that most of life is boring and occasionally beautiful. That people are selfish and kind simultaneously. That places are complicated and contradictory.
North London isn’t perfect. It’s also not terrible. It’s just a place where humans try to live well with limited resources and occasional success.
