The Naked Bike Ride, the Bus Strike, and a Week in North London

Lowri Griffiths reports on the week London outdid itself in spectacle, chaos, and ambition

From Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat. Lowri Griffiths, Big Smoke correspondent. Slightly overwhelmed.

London This Week: A Comprehensive Field Guide to Chaos

Let us establish what London managed to do this week: run a Naked Bike Ride, sustain an East London bus strike, welcome OpenAI to the neighbourhood, and somehow also process the philosophical implications of autonomous taxis that decline to pick people up. All simultaneously. All without any apparent coordination. This is London. This is the lifestyle.

North London Stays Calm. Mostly.

In Highbury, where I live and observe, the week passed with characteristic North London restraint: protest signs appeared by Tuesday, a petition against the taxi algorithm circulated by Wednesday, and by Thursday someone had turned the bus strike into a community walking group with a WhatsApp channel called “Solidarity Stroll N7.” I attended. It rained. We were undeterred.

The BBC London page covered some of this. Not enough. The naked cyclists alone deserve a full documentary series and possibly a BAFTA.

London is impractical, expensive, constantly under construction, and impossible to leave. I have tried to leave twice. Both times the train was cancelled. Draw your own conclusions.
